Job Description
The Acute Apheresis RN spends 80% or more of their time providing Apheresis treatments and direct patient care in accordance with company policies, procedures, and compliance programs. Areas of practice include therapeutic plasma exchange, RBC exchange and depletion, PLT and WBC depletions, PBSC and WBC collections, Photopheresis, and LDL apheresis. The Apheresis RN will partner with the lead physician to deliver quality care and a positive patient experience.
Responsibilities
General
- Provide direct patient care in multiple apheresis modalities.
- Perform apheresis treatments.
- Give organized and concise shift reports.
- Apply high-level thinking skills to patient schedules.
- Ensure adequate coverage of patient treatments and customer needs through appropriate scheduling.
- Maintain a safe environment by following universal infection control precautions.
- Stay current with advancements in therapeutic apheresis.
Patient Care
- Assess patients’ responses to therapeutic apheresis and make appropriate adjustments.
- Communicate problems or concerns to the lead physician.
- Monitor patients pre, during, and post-treatment to detect and respond to complications.
- Implement, administer, and document patients’ responses to prescribed treatments.
- Provide exceptional patient care and maintain patient confidentiality.
- Assist with and perform all equipment preventative maintenance and cleaning.
Staff Related
- Participate in Quality Assessment and Improvement (QAI) activities.
- Report new or unusual incidents.
- Act as a resource for other staff members.
- Participate in staff training and orientation.
- Maintain positive working relationships with all staff members to ensure effective treatments.
Other
- Review and comply with the Code of Business Conduct and all applicable policies and procedures.
- Assist with various projects as assigned by the direct supervisor.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Travel between assigned facilities and various locations within the community.
- Participate in on-call rotations, including night, day, weekend, and holiday shifts.
- Work in a healthcare facility with controlled air temperature and moderate noise levels.
- Potential exposure to infectious and contagious diseases/materials.
- Perform heavy lifting, moving of patients and/or equipment >200 lbs (with mechanical assistance).
Education
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing (R.N.) or hold a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing Science.
- Current appropriate state licensure.
- Certification in Apheresis Nursing is highly encouraged.
- Peripheral vein cannulation abilities preferred.
- Maintain current knowledge in advancements of therapeutic apheresis.
Experience and Required Skills
- Minimum of one year of RN experience required; ER background a plus.
- One year of apheresis or ICU/CCU/ED experience preferred.
- Demonstrated strong assessment skills related to critically ill patients.
- Successful completion of competency training in therapeutic apheresis and related procedures.
- BLS CPR certification required; ACLS preferred.
- Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
- Leadership skills with the ability to direct and supervise others.
- Valid driver’s license.
